Volunteer FAQ

What does a volunteer business consultant do?
Students need to see the relevance of education to the workplace and the need to complete their education. The consultant brings the real world into the classroom, helping students understand the relationship between what they learn in school and their success in later life.

What time commitment is involved?
The consultant spends one 30 to 45 minute class period in the classroom per week for 5 to 18 weeks, the number of visits is determined by the program being used. One visit to the classroom prior to the start of the program to observe and meet the students is recommended.

Does a consultant need to have prior teaching experience or a background in economics?
No!  Consultants only need a pro-business attitude, the desire and ability to relate their personal experience to students and the willingness to generate enthusiasm in the classroom.

Can the consultant choose when to visit the classroom?
The consultant may choose a class time which will work with their schedule and negotiate the day of the week with the teacher.

What kind of training is provided for the consultant?
The Junior Achievement staff will conduct a training session which includes a review of all materials, an overview of the classroom activities, a discussion of the characteristics of the students and an exploration of the expectations of the consultant/teacher partnership.

What materials does a consultant need to provide?
Only their time and enthusiasm!  Junior Achievement provides all curriculum materials, classroom activities, handouts and consultant, teacher and student guides.  Some consultants like to take promotional materials from their company, i.e., pencils, calendars, business cards, to distribute to in the classroom.
